Solar Heats Up: Accelerating Widespread Deployment

Solar Heats Up: Accelerating Widespread Deployment - Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming - 2009-09-24 - With sales growing 40 percent annually and costs falling rapidly, solar power has emerged as a core technology in America's transition a clean energy economy. Solar energy brings opportunity in the form of new jobs and rapid technological development. It also presents potential new challenges in the way we use land and infrastructure and the way we distribute and store energy. Chairman Edward J. Markey (D-Mass.) and the Select Committee on Energy Independence and Global Warming held a hearing entitled, "Solar Heats Up: Accelerating Widespread Deployment," examining current issues in solar energy development. WITNESS LIST: Dr. Stephanie A. Burns, Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer, Dow Corning; Frank De Rosa, Chief Executive Officer, NextLight Renewable Power; Steve Kline, Vice President for Corporate Environmental and Federal Affairs, Pacific Gas and Electric; Ms. Nada Culver, Esq., Senior Counsel, The Wilderness Society; Dr. Gabriel Calzada, Economics Professor, King Juan Carlos University. LED Grow Lights - The Lighting That Makes Sense

!±8± LED Grow Lights - The Lighting That Makes Sense

LED grow lights are the lights that are used to simulate sunlight for hydroponic plants. Hydroponics, which means "water working", is a way of growing plants inside the home. Hydroponic gardens take much less work than conventional gardens. They don't even need soil or sunlight. LED grow lights take the place of the sun in hydroponic systems and supply the plants with the full spectrum of light that the plants need for photosynthesis. These lights are biologically energy efficient and have a long life. By saving energy, and having no mercury pollution, they make sense for the environment. They can also be recycled.

LED grow lights have many advantages. They produce less heat than other lights. They are quiet and have very low maintenance. LED lights use less power and produce only the light that your plants need to grow. They can be used for any indoor growing method and no extra cooling method is needed. Testing reveals that plants that are exposed to LED grow lights were larger and grew quicker than plants that were exposed to another type of lighting. Because of the inspiring results of using this lighting, hydroponic growth has been revolutionized.

Hydroponic systems have been around for many centuries. Ancient cultures such as the Egyptians and Aztecs used hydroponics. The systems can range from being very simple to being more advanced technologically. A very simple system my just have a container of plants in a reservoir of nutrient solution. Other systems may use a more complex drip or irrigation system. More advanced systems spray nutrient solution on the roots. Whatever the system, the plants still need a reliable source of full spectrum light to fully mature. The LED grow lights provide all of the necessary light without any of the side effects of other types of lighting.

One of the best things about hydroponic gardening is that you have the control over the environment of your plant. In conventional gardening the sun can scorch or kill sensitive plants. This is not the case with LED grow lights. You can make sure that your plants have the perfect amount of sunlight for the quickest growth and highest yield. With the many choices of lights available, it is easy to find just the right light for your hydroponic needs. LED grow lights will be the lighting choice that makes the most sense for your plants.
